Light sockets are wide and varied these days. Here in Australia and New Zealand we primarily focus on five different types of light fitting connectors. They are the Edison Screw lamp fittings E14, E27, E40 and the Bayonet cap light fittings B22 and B15 and. In brief here are the difference between them all to help you find the best match for your lighting decorative plan. At the base of any lightbulb you will find the cap or the connector which touches the connector within the lamp holder fitting. This is where you find the answer to what type of connector it is it. E for Edison screw-in and B for Bayonet cap. The numbers of the bulbs generally match the width of the connector. For example, an E14 Edson screw is 14mm in diameter. When reordering use this knowledge of the codes to match the right bulb to your light socket. The Edison Screw was developed by the famous inventor Thomas Edison. General Electrics trademarked the design in 1909 so can you believe it’s already seen over 100 years of use! The light bulbs metal base is threaded and screws into a matching base in the lamp holder. This range includes the giant Edison Screw E40 with 40mm width fittings. Edison Screw E27 the standard, 27mm fitting and E14 at a smaller 14mm. ...Edison screw E14 (or known as ES14) is the small Edison screw-in fitting and the ‘little brother’ of the Edison screw e27. This light fitting has a diameter of 14mm so is very small in size. These can be found on candle shaped bulbs, bed side table lamps, lights with several bulbs and chandelier lightbulbs. Often a very short bulb is required for a lighting project which in where the E14 is used. This may include those that are converting vintage electrical insulators into pendant lights or using multiple bulbs in a lighting piece. Bayonet is the double pinned fitting. It has two radial pins on the base of the light bulb that fits into a socket with a matching L shape. This type of lamp fitting has been used primarily throughout Australia as the main fitting in the home. B22 is a Bayonet cap light fitting with a 22mm diameter. B15 is the small bayonet cap style light fitting with a 15mm diameter. This is found in campervans, motorhomes etc. The bayonet cap fitting is the standard fitting in Australia and New Zealand. However, with the purchase of lighting from overseas and the move to use the LED light technology, more and more lightbulbs in Australia are now Edison screw-in. You tend to find bayonet cap in older homes or antique or period style lamps and pendant lights. We find that the bayonet cap is slowly being phased out. We encourage customer to choose the Edison style light fitting as it will be more versatile in the future if you want to change your bulbs. Here at Creative Cables Australia and New Zealand we still stock bayonet cap lightbulbs to replace those in your existing lights. Most pendant however are made up using the screw-in lamp holders unless requested otherwise. You will find that many incandescent carbon filament lightbulbs will have a bayonet base. We have a wide range of modern E14 lamp fittings to create lighting pendants. The smaller fittings are useful in small spaces where large bulbs don’t fit or in areas where you would prefer to have small light source. In the lamp holders range you will find smooth style E14 lamp holders in painted Bakelite or thermoplastic material. We also stock double ferrule light fittings so you can easily attach a shade on and off your pendant. This style includes antique finishes, classic Bakelite and painted metallic qualities. If modern colours are your style have a look at the E14 porcelain lamp holder range. Colours include light blue, red, green, yellow and of course white and black. However, if you’re looking for antique style fittings of an existing lamp or period looking light golden brass e14 lamp sockets may be your choice. As part of our ever-expanding range we also stock light fittings to turn mason jars in lamps! As you can imagine you need a small bulb to fit in the jar so E14 fits the description perfectly. These E14 lampholders are built in the top of mason jar lids. Add your favourite coloured fabric cable and a funky filament LED bulb and you’re ready to decorate in bohemian vintage style. Choose between green, blue, clear and brown mason jars and add a lid in a wider range of colours including bronze, gold, white, black and zinc silver. The E14 bulbs that are most popular are the candle or gust of wind C35 shape. These are often used in chandeliers or period style lights. Alternatively, we stock the small olive shape and simple round globe light bulb. The Art range of LED light bulbs include a E14 fitting bulbs with a twisting filament like a moving flame! This small Edison Screw (SES) main reason for use is for smaller candelabras bulbs. In Australia this is not the standard bulb but used for more select household items. Its compact size means it can be used for Christmas lights.
